From a highly religious skeptic to now Reiki Master Teacher & lover of all the woo, I'd be happy to answer a few commonly asked questions I get at my practice.

Q: What is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of energy work that originated in Japan. It is a complimentary alternative therapy/technique used for stress reduction, relaxation and to promote wellness. It is administered by light touch "laying on hands" and can be administered without touch. Energy or "Ki" is balanced at different points throughout the body known as Chakras as the client lays on the reiki table and is guided through a brief meditation. Reiki is not a substitute for medical, psychological or psychiatric treatment; however many clients may choose to incorporate sessions as part of their existing self-care and wellness routines.
Q: Is it religious?
No. Reiki is not associated with any religion. Reiki connects the client with universal and unconditional love. Some clients who have particular religious backgrounds or spiritual traditions may feel the presence of their Higher Power; however there is no requirement to believe in any particular religion in order to receive the benefits of reiki.
Q: What does it feel like?
It varies for each client. Some clients feel a deep sense of peace, safety and love. Others have seen colors, feel heat/cold sensations, tingling, and have dozed off. Having an open, willing mind and heart will allow you to receive the most benefit as possible. Reiki should only feel light, relaxing and comfortable. Therefore, if at any point during the session you are uncomfortable, please speak to your practitioner so adjustments can be made. We have bolsters, blankets, eye pillows and can adjust as needed.
Q :How does it work?
Great question! Researchers are still trying to figure out the how (and exact science) behind the practice (stay tuned!) however we do know that reiki works by balancing the subtle energies in the body known as "ki" or life force; similar to acupuncture; and that when "ki" or life-force is out of balance, the client can feel symptoms of disharmony. Reiki restores the body's natural equilibrium so that relaxation and the body's ability to heal can occur.
Q: Is it right for me?
It could be a good fit, if you have done some healing work already and and are looking to supplement your existing protocols or wellness routines with a spiritually based modality. No formal meditation practice is necessary, just a willingness and curiosity. Reiki may also be helpful for those experiencing restlessness, trouble relaxing due to chronic stress/worry, or who experience any form of chronic pain. If your Therapist, Naturopathic Physician, Acupuncturist, Chiropractor or Functional Medical Provider (APRN, PCP, MD) has referred you to us, please let us know so we may thank them. Although there are no contraindications to Reiki; it should not be used during acute crisis or as a replacement for treatment by a physician or psychotherapist.
