behavior therapy & clinical consultation

Lindsay E. Day, M.S, BCBA, LBA, IBA, LMHP-VA is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with extensive experience supporting individuals and families through trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and values-centered approaches. Her clinical foundation is deeply informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based interventions, emotional regulation practices, and compassionate behavior analysis.

Lindsay holds a master's degree in Applied Behavior Analysis and is a licensed behavior analyst in the states of Connecticut and Virginia. As a life-long learner, Lindsay is committed to ongoing professional growth. You can find her at local ABA conferences geeking out on research or at a supervision group with other clinicians.  She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in clinical mental health counseling and is excited about the future of clinical behavior analysis.

Clients typically come to Lindsay after trying traditional psychotherapy modalities and/or are seeking practical tools to apply in the here-and-now in efforts to change their own behavioral patterns. Lindsay uses a non-judgmental approach drawing upon trauma-informed practices, cultural humility and compassionate-care.  She views mental health as a behavioral phenomenon worthy of study and has experience using behavior science to work with clients experiencing co-occurring disorders, complex presentations and symptoms related to: ADHD, Anxiety disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Major Depression, PTSD and trauma.

Outside of her clinical practice she enjoys spending time with her family (including 2 cats and a bunny), frequenting the local farmer's market and practicing yoga at the beach.

Common Questions & Answers

Q: What types of interventions do you use?

A: As a Behavior Analyst, I may draw upon the following Behavior Therapy Techniques which are rooted in principles of applied behavior analysis. I have received additional training and professional development to competently provide  Acceptance & Commitment Training (therapy) as well as other clinical modalities.

Behavior Therapy Techniques & Modalities

Modalities & Therapeutic Techniques commonly used in Behavior Therapy

Q: How does behavioral therapy differ from traditional psychotherapy?

A: Traditional Psychotherapy concentrates on thoughts, feelings, the subconscious mind, past experiences, and the inner world of the client. Traditional talk-therapy often involves open-ended discussion with the therapist. Treatment can evolve over the course of a few months to a few years as the focus is on long-term, gradual exploration of the self, personality and behavior. Behavior Therapy & CBA: Concentrates on observable behaviors and how environmental factors, triggers (antecedents), and results (consequences) shape and maintain those behaviors. Behavior therapy uses a highly systematic, data-driven approach. Clinical Behavior Analysis analyze behavioral chains, set specific goals, and use tools like positive reinforcement, exposure techniques, and skill-building to target behavior change.  Treatment is typically short-term and focused on a particular area, skill or goal. The goal is to quickly and effectively eliminate maladaptive behaviors while teaching new, functional skills so that healthy patterns can replace old, unhelpful or maladaptive behaviors in session and in the real world.

Q: Do you take my insurance?

A: Currently, I do not accept insurance. However I may consider doing so in the future. Sessions are private-pay and my hourly rate is $150/50 minute session. In efforts to be accessible to clients, I offer a sliding scale fee-for-service. If you are facing financial hardship, please don't hesitate to reach out to see if you qualify for one of our sliding-scale slots. These slots do fill quickly and are on a first-come-first-served basis.

Q: What mental health conditions would be a good fit for behavioral therapy?

A: Great question, as not all mental health conditions are suitable for behavior therapy. Common diagnoses and behavioral symptoms that could benefit from behavior therapy include: anxiety, phobias, major depression, ADHD; as well as burnout, grief and stress. Behavioral therapy at Daybreak Holistic Wellness would not be considered for individuals experiencing acute mental health crisis, suicidal ideation or individuals requiring 24/7 care. If you are experiencing these types of challenges, please call 911, 211 or go to your nearest emergency room.

Q: Can you diagnose me with a mental health disorder or condition?

A: As a BCBA, I do not diagnose clients with mental health conditions. You will not find me using the DSM as part of your intake assessment. Instead, I will be asking questions about behavior in a very specific non-judgmental but curious way. My questions maybe similar to a traditional psychotherapist but I look at the function of the behavior, what it's purpose is, what happens before/after; as well as the contexts in which you are more likely to engage in behaviors as well as those contexts in which behaviors are less likely to occur. My questions focus on gathering information to identify patterns so suitable replacement strategies can be taught, practiced, modeled and incorporated into your day.

Q: I've heard of a BCBA but don't they only work with kids with Autism or Developmental Disabilities?

A: So cool that you have heard of a BCBA! Yes, many BCBA's work with people who have ASD or experience other forms of neurodivergence or developmental disabilities. However, BCBA's are trained in the science of applied behavior analysis. The science of ABA can be applied to all types of meaningful settings and populations. More and more BCBA's are using the science in areas such as health and fitness, geriatrics, self-care, habit reversal, mental health and more. It's an exciting time to be a BCBA!

Q: I live outside of CT but really want to work with you. Is that even possible?

A: I offer clinical consultation sessions to individuals who live outside of CT (and VA) and are interested in exploring behavior change techniques via consultation. Clinical consultation can be done remotely via secured video conferencing.

"She is exceptional. She has a true gift with working with middle schoolers. She gets what my daughter is going through and provided her with tools that she actually uses. Every middle school parent knows that this is such a tough age but working with Lindsay makes this time easier for all of us. Thank you. "
